Every Thursday at 10 a.m., the Family Resource Center in Springtown hosts a “Little Sprouts Gardening” class to promote gardening at a young age as well as teaching various aspects of horticulture to children.
The class has been happening for a few years now. Typically, the gardening class is held at the Family Resource Center on E. Fifth Terrace, but sometimes Mieke Brock, an FRC parent engagement coordinator, hosts the class at the Springtown Park behind Brookshires.
The class is an interactive and educational gardening experience designed to teach children the basics of how to create a garden full of fruits, herbs and vegetables. The age range of the class is from toddlers to pre-K. Every month, a type of herb, fruit or vegetable is selected as the topic of the month. The April topic was herbs like rosemary, lemon balm and cilantro. During the April 10 class, the herbs of the day to be planted were rosemary and parsley. Mieke provides the parents with a fact sheet about the herb, listing all the health benefits and steps to take care of the plant.
