Azle swimmers compete at regionals

Porcupines still in playoff race

Eight members of the Lady Hornets will be competing this weekend at the Class 5A Region II Swim Meet in Mansfield.

Karla Rodriguez is competing in three events, while Kayley Brekel is in two. Rodriguez will compete in the 100-yard and 200 freestyle, along with being a member of the 200 and 400 free relays. Brekel qualified individually in the 50 free and is part of the 200 free relay.

Also qualifying were the 200 medley relay of Ava Dash, Nekoda Averitte, Sophia Roark and Mavis Caldentey, along with Kaylee Daniels and Haven Brown on the 200 and 400 free relays.

From regionals, the top two in each event qualify for state, along with eight wild cards from across the state’s eight regions.

“Our kids have worked since August to prepare for our biggest meet of the season,” Azle coach Amy Estes said. “Swimming is a long season and we continually have to make adjustments to training to ensure we achieve our goals.”

SPRINGTOWN BOYS BASKETBALL

The Porcupines (9-15, 6-5 in District 7-4A) split games last week, but remained in the playoff chase as they won 43-40 at home against Castleberry Jan. 28 and lost 75-50 at Decatur Jan. 31.

Vs. Castleberry: Dylan Crutchfield 11 points, 15 rebounds, five steals; Kaine Grubbs 8 points; Ethan Graham 5 points, six rebounds, five assists Vs. Decatur: Crutchfield 9 points, four rebounds; Keegan Gutierrez 8 points; Grayson Brooks 8 points The Porcupines were hosting Eagle Mountain at press time in a game that could decide the fourth and final playoff berth. The Knights won the first meeting 52-39.

Springtown travels to district-leading Krum Feb.

7 and hosts second place Burkburnett Feb. 11, all tipping off at 7:30 p.m.

AZLE BOYS BASKETBALL The Hornets (9-22, 0-9 in District 5-5A) fell 47-40 at Brewer Jan. 31, a game they led 22-17 at the half. They were led by Britt Haas with 19 points, while Bryce Robinson and Jayden Taylor each added 7.

The Hornets travel to Chisholm Trail Feb. 7 and host Fossil Ridge Feb. 11 to end the regular season, all at 7:30 p.m.

AZLE GIRLS BASKETBALL The Lady Hornets (6-24, 1-10 in District 5-5A) lost 6026 at Brewer Jan. 31. Abbey Natusch paced Azle with 11 points.

Azle ended the season by hosting Aledo at press time.

SPRINGTOWN GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Lady Pines (11-17, 5-8 in District 7-4A) saw their playoff hopes slip away with a 95-31 loss at Decatur on Jan. 31. This came after a 7811 home win over Castleberry Jan. 28.

Vs. Castleberry: Esther Balado 21 points, Brylynn Bazzell 15 points, Addy Burtnett 11 points, Olivia Williams 11 points Vs. Decatur: Balado 11 points, Burtnett 8 points The Lady Pines were ending their season at home against Eagle Mountain at press time.

LAKE WORTH BOYS BASKETBALL

The Bullfrogs (10-17, 0-11 in District 7-4A) fell 70-25 at Krum Jan. 28 and 63-47 at Bridgeport Jan. 31.

Vs. Krum: De’Jay Black 7 points, five rebounds; Kenneth Williams 6 points, three steals; Eddie Paige eight rebounds Vs. Bridgeport: Ayden Brooks 14 points, 10 rebounds; Braylen Fridia 11 points; Black 6 points, five rebounds Lake Worth hosts Decatur Feb. 7 and travels to Eagle Mountain Feb. 11 to end the season, each at 7:30 p.m.

LAKE WORTH GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Lady Frogs (16-14, 2-11 in District 7-4A) lost 60-39 to visiting Krum Jan. 28 and 9330 at Bridgeport Jan. 31.

Vs. Krum: Jackie Cleveland 18 points, 13 rebounds; Kylah Nabors 7 points; Breanna Arellano 6 points; Cherysh Luiv six rebounds Vs. Bridgeport: Nabors 12 points; Cleveland 9 points, seven rebounds Lake Worth was ending its season at home against Castleberry at press time.

AZLE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

The Fightin’ Crusaders (217, 2-2 in TAPPS 2-1A) 64-42 at Texoma Christian, No. 7 in the state among TAPPS 1A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, Jan.

28 and won 42-38 at Wichita Falls Christ Academy Jan. 31 to clinch a playoff berth.

The Lady Crusaders (12-8, 2-1 in TAPPS 2-1A) fell 55-26 at Texoma Christian Jan. 28 and won 54-13 at Wichita Falls Christ Academy Jan. 31: Vs. Christ Academy: Dari Skartvedt 12 points, Lauren Goodrich 10 points AC hosts Texoma Christian Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.

The Hornets (1-8-1, 0-4 in District 5-5A) fell 8-0 at Saginaw Jan, 28 and 1-0 at home against Granbury Jan.

The Porcupines (3-4-1, 0-1 in District 8-4A) ended predistrict with a 6-0 home win over Bowie Jan. 28. They then lost 3-1 at Eagle Mountain to open league play Jan. 31.

LAKE WORTH BOYS SOCCER The Bullfrogs (3-7-1, 0-1 in District 8-4A) dropped a 2-1 contest to visiting Ferris Jan.

LAKE WORTH GIRLS SOCCER The Lady Frogs (6-3-1, 0-1 in District 8-4A), ranked No. 18 in the state in 4A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, ended predistrict play with a 1-0 loss at Abilene Cooper Jan. 28.

Cooper scored the winning goal with nine seconds left in the game.

Lake Worth then opened district at home with a 4-0 loss against Lake Dallas Jan. 31.

The Lady Frogs have back-to-back home games against Collegiate Academy at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 7 and Eagle Mountain at 7:30 p.m. Feb.

AZLE GIRLS POWERLIFTING The Lady Hornets made short work of the competition in their own Hornet Girls Invitational recently, scoring 72 points and winning first place by 31 points. Nineteen lifters placed in the top three in their respective weight classes.

Ella Swaim was named Best Lifter in Small Weight Classes.

Case Moore was named Best Lifter in the Big Weight Classes and Cayden Lawson was named Best Lifter in the Small Weight Classes. SPRINGTOWN BOYS POWERLIFTING

The Porcupines placed third at the Saginaw Meet recently as Luis Lazcano won the 165-pound weight class and Chevy Alarcon won the 242 class. Other top individual placings were by Hugo Martinez, second at 132, and Brayden Kearby was third at 275.

SPRINGTOWN GIRLS POWERLIFTING

The Lady Pines finished second at Venus, scoring 58 points to 59 for Hillsboro.

Individual standout performances were turned in by Abigail Stoner, who was named Best Lifter in the Lightweight Division, and Grace Lewis was named Best Lifter in the Heavyweight Division.

Meanwhile, the JV lifters won the Weatherford Meet with Ryliee Cole earning Best Lifter in the Lightweight Division and La Niya Morgan Lee winning Best Lifter in the Heavyweight Division.
